Idlewild (Scrapyard) Disc Golf Course Stairs

Scrapyard at Idlewild Park in Charlotte, NC was designed and developed to help host the 2012 combined Disc Golf World Championships. The course was funded through donated scrap metal and was built on a tight budget. Hole 9 is a representation of this. The long tee plays almost entirely over a lake to a basket perched on a levy. There was almost no landing area and most tess shots and missed putts found their self at the bottom of the hill. In 2015 I organized a project to create a retaining wall around the putting green. This allowed players to land at the basket and prevented roll aways from missed putts. It also reduced erosion at the basket. Discs still find their way to the bottom of the hill so this year I assisted the Course Director Tony Cruz in building stairs up to the green. The scope of the retaining wall was also expanded as a sustainability improvement; further protecting the hill side.

It is important to have a critical eye and continue to update courses. Course needs are ever changing. Identifying and fixing these issues is essential to the longevity and safety of an existing disc golf course.
